How do I protect my 18 year old daughter’s money?

My daughter is turning 18 in a few days and will be getting around $100,000 from a surgery gone wrong when she was an infant. My husband and I have spent very little of her money although she has health issues which has cost a great deal. She has a boyfriend of two years of the same age; neither of them drive yet and so don’t work. We’re afraid she’ll go on a spending spree and we can’t legally prevent her wasting her money. I would appreciate any advice. It’s not enough money to set up a trust; we want her to have enough to buy a car and a small home when she’s able. She’s doing well health-wise but has lived a spoiled and protected life.

From your own admission, she has led a spoiled life. This alone implies that it would be difficult for her to control her spending if given the money all at once – and it’s not really all her fault, you & your husband has to recognize that your method of raising her is partially to blame.

You may want to consider “billing” her for the money you spent on her – not so much to take it back, but to hold it in an account in your name – for her ultimate use. But you don’t tell her that. Just say that she owes you the money.

Then try and get her to start a savings account, and hope that your rationale will be heard ( but knowing kids, my own included, I don’t have much hope that it will happen ).

Alternatively, just do not tell her about the money. Keep it in an account in her name, but dole it out as you feel necessary.

In a variety of settings, a mysterious hand enters the frame of the picture and removes (the pacifier) it. It’s not until a young cousin enters the mix that peer pressure accomplishes what adult machinations could not. Strong child appeal should make these books popular. – …
